The aim of this project is a better understanding of fundamental metabolic processes and their regulation related to the accumulation of biomass. This will be done by a coupled approach of experimental and modeling methods leading to the development of multiscale metabolic models. These models span the range from general whole plant C- and N-models to stoichiometric models for specific organs to quantitative flux models within the central metabolism to detailed kinetic models for specific pathways. This hierarchical approach offers both an overview about the biological processes as well as details of relevant parts. Initially the methods will be developed for barley (Hordeum vulgare) and later transferred to rice (Oryza sativa).
